How a local business actually shows up on Google Maps

Maps is often the first screen when someone searches nearby. A pretty site that is not connected to your Google profile will not get that tap-to-call.

If you run a shop in Vendée or anywhere people search “near me”, Google Maps is usually where the decision starts — not your Instagram grid. This article is the sequence I use with clients, in order.

Maps is a list. You need to be a trustworthy row in that list.

People compare two or three results. They look at stars, whether you are open, a photo that looks like the real place, and a button to call or get directions. They do not read a 12-page brochure first.

Your Google Business Profile is that row. Your website is what they open when they want proof: hours, services, a form, a face. One without the other is incomplete.

The name, address and phone must match everywhere

Google is picky about consistency. The name on Maps, the name on the site, and the name on the door should be the same idea — not three creative variants. Same for the street address and the phone number you actually answer.

If the site says one town and Maps says another, or the phone goes to an old mobile, you leak trust. Fix that before you pay for ads.

Categories, hours, photos — then ask for reviews

Pick the most specific primary category (optician, driving school, printer), not a vague “company”. Set real hours, including Saturday mornings if you are open. Add photos of the façade, the counter, the team — not stock beaches.

Reviews come after the work is good. Ask at the right moment, never fake them. Reply to the ones you get, including the awkward ones.

The website’s job is to confirm you are real

A fast page on a phone, your address in text (not only in an image), a link back to Maps, and a way to contact you. That is enough to start. Auto-École Cousin, Optique Rone and Lio Imprimerie are built on that logic — different trades, same job: be findable, then be credible.

If you want the commercial package I sell, it is 900€ + 25€/month, Google and Maps included, live in 2–4 weeks. This article is still useful if you do it yourself.
